Lughnasadh (Wicker Gaia) celebration in Castlefest 2012
Переглядів 9 тис.12 років тому
The Wickerman burning has become a highlight of Castlefest over the years. It is an age-old ritual where unity and connection to the primal forces are symbolised. Every year we search for a beautiful symbol to build out of willow brands. A symbol with which we want to show what is living in the heart of Castlefest. This year that symbol will be very powerful: Gaia, who is described as the Greek...

Interesting. I can't even imagine how much work that statue must've taken before it came to completion - and then to burn it all before your very eyes. I'd be crying inside if it was my creation. I'd also like to add that I've been an amateur pagan of sorts for years now, but some of the rituals that revival movements have created, such as this one, somehow ring hollow to me. Obviously, for some of the people here and the attendees to the festival, it was an event full of meaning and beauty. I still struggle to connect with the revival movement's attempts to live-up to their name. I've been to Nepal and India and have seen their rituals and they feel worlds apart - even when the yogi performing it is wearing red addidas' and the altar is garlanded with worn plastic flowers. I'm curious why this is. I suspect it's a mish-mash of exoticism, which is what the esoteric thrives on, and the fact that its sourced in thousands of years of living tradition. Things just meld better and it feels like a seamless part of the cultural landscape. I'm interested to see what will become of these rituals in the coming decades - whether they will take a more central role in the culture and whether they will have that organic, sacred quality that I can so readily connect to in cultures who haven't been uprooted from their shamanic roots.

O Mighty Ones who watch us with love and pride, I ask that you look upon me here tonight And hear my prayer, in my love for you all. By heart and mind, by hand and eye, May it be so, may it be so. Here is my heart, burning with love, With pride, with respect, with longing for your flame. This heart is offered to hand outstretched Who is right to hold this heart and this soul. I await your signs, O Mighty Ones. Send me thrice three signs, Clear as day so that I will believe them. If I receive these signs, I will devote myself To my Fulltrui forever, But I will not forget the names of other Gods, Nor fail to honor them for their blessings. If I receive no signs, O Mighty Ones, I will wait until a sign comes to try yet again, And in the meantime I will make of myself A worthy gift to offer to the Holy Powers. Help me to do this, O Gods. Help me to make myself worthy And be the gift I would wish to give you.

Actually, most of the greatest Vikings, including Harold Fairhair, Lief Erikson and Snorri Sturlusson (who wrote much of the Icelandic Sagas that are the main reason why we know ANYTHING about their culture) were Christians. With Christianity came improved agricultural and architectural techniques and the Roman alphabet we are writing in now...things that helped the Norse culture to grow and thrive, whereas otherwise it would have perished in obscurity.
